"YOU'LL NEVER PLAY A LEADING LADY": BABE I'VE BEEN DOING IT MY WHOLE LIFE.

Updated: Jan 14, 2024

Hey, hey babes. Happy Sunday! I hope you have had the most gorgeous week and are getting ready to kick next week’s ass! Let me ask you a question: how many movies, TV shows or musicals have you seen where the leading lady is taller than her leading man? Yeah, not many, right? A stereotypical female lead is usually petite and shorter than the leading man and perceived as being frail and weak, unable to fight her own battles…

Society likes to dictate which role they think you should be playing because of your body type. Sorry. Let me just repeat that. Society likes to dictate which role they think you SHOULD BE PLAYING because of your BODY TYPE? Yeah. You read it right the first time. Let’s just remind ourselves that being the main character is a mind-set and not an image we have to become. Becoming the main character requires determination to change the narrative of your own life. The objective of the main character is for the audience to be inspired by their story, whatever it may be. They aspire to their actions, not their appearance.

When I was growing up, seeing stories being brought to life on stage and screen, my heart would always sink seeing the female lead always being no taller than 5’5. Being a tall girly, I would always put myself into the bracket of the quirky best friend who clearly doesn’t deserve love because of her height. Then, I grew up, entered the real world and realised, I have always been the leading lady…of my own story. Seeing couples holding hands on the street, defying the norm of what the mainstream media has dictated as a conventionally normal couple. I personally have been on dates with people of many different heights, and have been told to my face that my height is one of their favourite things about me. If fourteen-year-old me could hear that now, the world would be her oyster.

There is a line in Mean Girls: The Musical that Regina George sings stating “I never weigh more than 115 (pounds)” Regina George is the queen bee, a leader and praised by her peers for her beauty and popularity. To me, being a Regina is a mind-set. A Regina does not have to be 115 pounds to gain a “queen bee” title. She has that reputation because of her actions.

If you are one of my babes who is still on the road to truly loving and accepting your body, I promise you, the time will come where you will look in the mirror in awe. You’ll stare at your long legs and sexy curves and be captivated by how fucking beautiful you are. For me, it was a long road, I had the most incredible people around me who understood my struggles. They fought for me when someone made an inappropriate comment about my height that was completely un-called for. They could see it upset me and they stepped in. I hope you have people like this in your life supporting you because YOU DESERVE IT. You deserve to have an army behind you, guiding you through your self-love journey. I am extremely lucky to still have that army in my life, however when someone makes a rude ass comment about my gorgeous long legs, I can defend myself. I know my worth. I remember sitting on my bed having just graduated drama school and thinking “I have never felt more at home in my body before.” I am sending all my positive vibes your way that someday very soon you will experience that exact same feeling.

BIG LOVE always,

Lucy Xx
